Academic Shoot Critic

http://andresphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com I like how the student used the rule of lines in the first pictures to make the trophies stand out more. I also like how he used the rule of thirds in the third photo by adjusting the subject to the top of the photo. I think that he could of had a better focus on his pictures to make the subject more clear. He could also make the lighting better in the second photo.

Academic Shoot Reflection and Critic

1. Some challenges I faced getting photos for this shoot were whenever I tried to take a picture of students working on classwork they would always look at the camera. Some people moved a lot and waved at the camera which made it hard to get a good focused shot. I also felt weird getting close to people to get a focused picture. 2. I found myself thinking a lot about getting a good focused picture. I also tried to make sure the student that I was trying to capture was doing something academic and being productive so I didn't just have a picture of someone sitting at a desk doing nothing. To make the pictures focused I would focus the camera on the subject for a few seconds to make sure it looked good. 3. If I had to do this assignment again I would get closer to the subjects so that I could get a clearer and more focused picture. I would also try to incorporate more of the rules of photography in my pictures. 4. I would probably get the same angles with the camera and go to t

Photoshop Practice

Image
1. In this picture I used the rule of thirds because I put my subject off to the side in the photo so he wasn't centered. 2. The subject of my picture is the student and the cup he is writing on. The focus is on the student and the background of the classroom is blurred out. 3. I think it is clear what the subject is in my photo because the focus is clearly on the student. 1. In this picture I used the rule of simplicity because I made the focus on a specific subject in the photo. 2.  The subject of my picture is the water being poured into the cup. I made this my subject by putting my focus on the water and the cup that the water is being poured into. 3.  It is clear what the subject is because the focus is on the water and cup. 1. I think this picture I used the rule of balance because there is a student on one side and then the spiral on the other side making the picture pretty balanced. 2. The subject of my picture is the student writing in the spiral.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

Image
A) Some main points I read about in the article are photoshop and photo manipulating pictures. Many photographer's made people in their pictures look skinnier or have a different tone of skin so that they were considered more "attractive". B) The philosophy of newspapers by the Washington post and the New York Times in photo manipulation is to make the pictures more appealing. Sometimes they may put other people's heads on celebrities to make the actor look thinner or more attractive. Newspapers may also combine two pictures to make everyone in the picture look up to their standards. Sometimes newspapers will also photoshop models so that they don't have as many "flaws". C) I think it is acceptable to take two photos and merge them together to make a better picture because then you can have actual pictures that you took and have the events be accurate. By merging two photos together you could maybe make sure everyone is looking away from the camera o

Favorite 2012 Winner

Image
1. I picked this photo because the photographer captured the action in the photo. The picture makes it look like everything just stopped in time. 2.  This picture shows simplicity in the front of the picture. This is because the paint is in full focus. This picture has a merger which is the girl in the background. 1.  I think I could take pictures in a science classroom to get cool pictures like these while people are doing experiments. 2. I think I would like to visit Mrs. Ramos classroom. 3. I will get different angles and perspectives while students are working on work or they are doing experiments.

Filling the frame

Image
I feel like this picture fills the frame the best with interesting stuff. The picture captures the sparks in really good focus. The sparks go everywhere filling up the frame. The girl is very focused in her work and the background is blurred out so that the attention stays focused on her and her work.

Action and Emotion

Image
I think this picture shows the most action and emotion because the students are in a play, so they are all showing different emotions. The girl that is being raised up is obviously hitting a big note while singing because she has her hands up and all of the attention is on her.

The Story

Image
I think this shows the best story. In this picture I see the girls going through with the science experiment following the instructions carefully. The girl on the left is scared about what will happen while the girl on the right performs the experiment and is surprised by the reaction. The photographer also included the fire blanket in the background in case the experiment went wrong.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos of your first 4 prompts (Square, Metal, Happy,  Bowie)? I had trouble finding things to take pictures of for square. I ended up finding a floor with squares which worked  perfectly. I also couldn't really find anything that made me happy (probably because we are at school) but I then had Amy and Ella laugh to give me a perfect happy picture. I thought Bowie was pretty easy because we are at Bowie and there are plenty of things that I could take a picture of for that one. I also didn't have trouble on metal because there are many things made of metal at Bowie. 2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. I found thinking a lot about if my picture was in focus or  not. I feel like if my pictures aren't in focus then it is har

Avoid Mergers

Image
This picture shows what a picture looks like with a merger. The merger in this picture is the burning building in the background. The main focus is on the front building, but the background takes away from the focus of the building and makes the picture busy.

Simplicity

Image
This picture shows simplicity because there is only one color in the photo. It is also simplicity because you can clearly tell that the woman is the subject of the photo.

Balance

Image
This picture shows balance. I know this because the main focus of the photo shows an equal group of people on both sides. This makes the photo look almost symmetrical. There are two people on one side and two people on the other side. Even though the people on the right are farther away it appears there is a bigger crowd behind them which makes it balanced.

Rule of thirds

Image
This picture shows the rule of thirds because the buildings are a little off to the side. If you imagine 9 boxes on the image the buildings meet the corners of the boxes on the right. This makes the image draw attention to the right side of the photo.

Framing

Image
In this picture the broken window sort of acts like a frame. It captures the damage in the background and makes the firefighter on the ladder stand out. The dark colors in the windows also make the lighter colors in the middle and background stick out more.

Lines

Image
This picture uses the rule of lines because there are repetitive patterns of lines which makes the man falling from the building stick out from the background. The lines are all going up and down which makes the background not too busy.

Prompt Shoot 1

Image
Bowie This picture shows mergers because the Bowie building in the background and the plant and tree are all merging making it hard to see the focal point of the picture. Metal This picture uses the rule of thirds. The lockers are off to the side and in focus. I think next time I could make sure there was less things in the background. happy In this picture I think I could have used the rule of thirds and gone closer them to make it a clearer picture. square In this picture I used lines because there are many lines on the floor and lines on the walls. I believe this picture would be better if I had a pop of color or something to make the main focus and stand out of the lines.
