Ian joins the army to help fight for his country. His friends and family threw parties for him to say goodbye. As he started basic training he soon had second thoughts about his decision. A childhood injury came back as he fell on his left elbow after the first day of basic training. He could of possibly been disqualified from performing service because he never mentioned this injury earlier in time. Basic training was tough and he got little sleep. He started to build bonds with the other soldiers as the training continued. He then received weapons and started completing practices to get ready for Iraq later on.

Ian becomes stressed by training and other things on his mind. He comes home to visit family and friends and him and his girlfriend, Kayla, pick out an engagement ring. After his breakup with Kayla later in the year his dad feels like this has made him use drugs, smoke, and start other bad habits. He continues to have training and gets to visit home every once in a while. Him and his new girlfriend, Kirsten start to have problems. Ian gets baptized on his mom's birthday in 2008. Ian then gets prepared and ready to head off to Iraq.

Ian and Kirsten break up after their recent problems. The soldiers perform their duties in Iraq hoping to come home soon. The climate is rough in Iraq and Ian is still receiving little sleep. He comes home for a mid-tour visit later in the year. Once his year in Iraq is finished he is glad to be done and satisfied with his work. A couple days after he gets home his girlfriend, Devin, and him apply for marriage. They then get married in a quiet courtroom.

2. One thing that motivated Ian to join the army was to help fight for his country. He also joined because he wanted to add to his family's legacy. He wanted to start his life as an adult in a productive way.

3. During basic training Ian got very little sleep and many commands. He also had to go through intense physical training and harassment. After the first day his left elbow started to hurt. He related this injury to childhood injury. The childhood injury he had not mentioned to anyone might disqualify him from service.

4.  During Ian's pre-military life he hurt his left elbow. This became a problem as he was being trained because he fell on it and hurt it again. He didn't tell anyone about his childhood injury which could have resulted in withdrawal from his service.

5. During his time at home he picked out an engagement ring with his girlfriend, Kayla. Later on in the year they broke up hitting Ian pretty hard and possibly influencing him to start using drugs and enforce other bad habits.

6.  Ian's time in Iraq made him stronger as a person. He also formed many bonds with the other soldiers and started to become a better leader. Iraq and being a part of the military changed his life and him as a person.
